About Ruud Vink

Ruud Vink, born in 1964, has a rich history in the automotive sector. His professional journey began in 1983, where he specialized early on in selling accessories for vans, trucks, and 4x4 off-road vehicles. In 1992, he opened his first business, named Rudy's 4x4 Parts. Over five years, he worked hard to build his company, which eventually led to its sale. Although the sale did not yield financial profit, the experience was invaluable, and Ruud learned a lot from it.

In 1999, Ruud started Orion Automotive, a company that quickly grew and became a leading player in the car accessories market. Together with his partner, he built the company into a success, serving both the B2B market and the online market. After 22 years, Ruud and his partner decided to sell the company, and he took a step back to consider his next steps.

Now, at the age of 60, Ruud feels too young to sit still and has found a new passion: working with ABS plastic. He is inspired by the possibilities this material offers for the automotive sector and is constantly developing new ideas. He sketches his ideas simply in his notebook, and although learning CAD drawing is a challenge, he continues to develop himself. He already owns a professional 3D scanner and plans to purchase a large-format 3D printer soon.

With a small but close-knit team of people around him, Ruud is slowly but surely starting up again. Many in the industry know him, and he looks forward to contributing actively to the sector again. For Ruud, nothing is mandatory, everything is allowed. He sees the future full of possibilities and is open to new adventures.

My First Project: Dacia Duster 2018+ Trunk Organizer

Earlier this year, I started an inspiring project for the Dacia Duster 2018+: a completely new trunk organizer. This product was conceived and developed from scratch, with each step carefully followed to achieve the final result.

The Process:

  • Idea and Sketches:
  • CAD Drawing:
  • MDF Mold and Prototype:
  • Production:

Ideas & Sketches

It all started with an idea and a few sketches. These early concepts helped to get a clear picture of what I wanted to achieve.

CAD Drawing

The trunk area was then accurately scanned and drawn in a CAD program. This ensured that every size and fit was perfectly tailored to the Dacia Duster.

MDF Mold and Prototype:

Using the CAD drawing, a mold was milled from MDF. This prototype was then extensively tested for fit and functionality.

Production

After everything was thoroughly tested and approved, the first series of 100 pieces went into production. It was a great moment to see the first product of Finch Automotive being “born”.

Current Projects

Currently, I am working on a similar project for the Dacia Duster 2024+. The methodology remains the same: from idea and sketch, to CAD, mold, and finally production.

Above, you can see an image of the CAD model of the trunk organizer that fits the Dacia Duster 2018+. This project is a good example of the step-by-step approach I use to create high-quality, functional products.
